International shipping can be complex, especially when it comes to determining who is responsible for what at each stage of the journey. This is where Incoterms (International Commercial Terms) come into play.

What Are Incoterms?

Incoterms are standardized trade terms published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). They define the responsibilities of buyers and sellers in international trade transactions, including:

  • Who arranges and pays for transportation
  • Who handles customs clearance
  • Who bears the risk of loss or damage
  • Where delivery takes place

Key Incoterms for 2024

EXW (Ex Works)

The seller makes the goods available at their premises. The buyer handles all transportation, export clearance, and import procedures.

Best for: Domestic transactions or when the buyer has a strong logistics network.

FOB (Free On Board)

The seller delivers goods on board the vessel at the named port of shipment. Risk transfers when goods are on board.

Best for: Sea freight where the buyer wants control over the main carriage.

CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight)

The seller pays for transportation and insurance to the destination port. Risk transfers at the port of loading.

Best for: Buyers who want to minimize logistics complexity.

DAP (Delivered at Place)

The seller delivers when goods are placed at the buyer's disposal at the named destination, ready for unloading.

Best for: Buyers who want maximum convenience and minimal logistics involvement.
